Radio's Greatest Detectives (Radio Spirits, 2004)

Ah, Old-Time Radio.  Stan Freberg called it "The Theatre of the Mind," and he's so right.  It amazes me how quickly I can get sucked into a good production with snappy patter and well-placed sound effects.  Freberg's point was, you can do things on radio that would never work in the movies or on TV.  And it's true.
Here's three hours' worth of Golden-Age mysteries.  The Sherlock Holmes story isn't Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce, but their successors instead, but hey, they were honest about it right on the artwork, and that's more than most companies would do.  Also, there are many good moments for sampling here; I've already found a few moments I have to go back and cut out for my own use...otherwise, I won't ramble on here--the artwork says it all, and it's all very enjoyable, so enjoy!

Most of what Radio Spirits releases is available for free at Archive.org, although those mp3s are usually 32kbps-64kbps (standard for OTR). The others are still available for free, but not as openly because RS claims they have legal rights (there is no copyright on any of these programs, but there may be on some scripts).
I belong to a semi-private group on-line. There's a lot of OTR, plus more recent (1960s-present) BBC & South African programs (S Africa had no national TV until the late 1970s, so their Golden Age of Radio lasted decades longer than ours in the US).
